The shipping company, Maersk Ghana Ltd as part of efforts to help prevent flood, cholera and other related diseases has cleaned part of Tema to commemorate World Cleanup Day.

The staff of the company joined hands with residents of Tema Community 1 Site 15 and members of Tema Metropolitan Assembly to desilt gutters, sweep and weed.

Country Customers Service Manager for Maersk, Edmund Sasu Ntiamoah told JoyNews’ Kwame Yankah that the impact of dirty environment poses a health risk to all hence the cleanup exercise.

According to him, the exercise forms part of their policy for a sustainable environment.

“Being in Ghana we have all seen the effects of the uncleanliness, the floods we have witnessed over the years so we thought it wise that it would be value-adding to help clean up our society,” Mr Ntiamoah added.

The staff presented dustbins, gloves among other items to the residents to undertake regular cleanup exercises.

Meanwhile, Assemblyman for Padmore Electoral Area, Charles Kobina Amos is grateful to Maersk for showing interest in sanitation issues of the area.

He, however, urged other companies in the area to help join in the campaign explaining the assembly could not complete the job alone.

“Maersk has done a marvellous work today and this is a message going to the institutions around here. None of them came have volunteered. I urged them to watch what Maersk has done and do the same,” Mr Amos added.
