The Accra Sports Stadium is set to host Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Chad on March 17, 2025.
This match, part of the fifth round of qualifiers, is a key moment for the Black Stars as they push forward in their campaign.
For the past year, the stadium has not been a frequent venue for the national team. Its last competitive fixture was in November 2024, when Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Niger in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Following that game, the stadium was closed for major pitch renovations.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) brought in Green Grass Technology to work on the deteriorating playing surface. The pitch has since undergone a complete transformation, with reports indicating significant improvements.
The decision to use the Accra Sports Stadium over other venues, such as the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, is linked to CAF’s strict facility standards. In September 2024, CAF withdrew its approval for the Baba Yara Stadium, citing issues like an inadequate playing surface. This followed repeated warnings about non-compliance with FIFA Category A requirements for international matches.
In response, the NSA took swift action to ensure the Accra stadium met the required standards, working with Green Grass Technology to restore the pitch. This effort paid off, as CAF later approved Accra as the venue for Ghana’s World Cup qualifier.
Previously considered a backup venue for the Black Stars, the stadium has regained prominence following its successful hosting of Ghana’s home game against Sudan earlier in the year. Now, with the upcoming fixture against Chad, Accra Sports Stadium is reaffirming its status as a top football venue in the country.
