Gas supply to thermal plants in Tema from Nigeria, along with gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema, will be curtailed.

This is contained in a joint statement from the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as they announce that the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has commenced maintenance works on the gas pipeline transporting natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana.

The maintenance is scheduled to take place from February 5 to March 2, 2025.

According to a statement issued by WAPCo, the planned works will involve cleaning the pipeline, a process known as “pigging,” as well as the replacement of some sub-sea equipment.

“This temporary suspension of gas supply will force thermal plants in Tema to shut down due to the unavailability of gas,” the statement noted.

It added, “To minimize disruptions to power supply, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with stakeholders in the energy sector, has secured alternative liquid fuel for some generating plants in Tema that can operate on dual fuel sources. This measure aims to ensure continued power generation throughout the maintenance period.”

GRIDCo, ECG, and other key players in the energy sector have assured the public that they are working diligently to mitigate any potential power supply challenges that may arise due to the shutdown.

The public and stakeholders in the energy sector are urged to cooperate during this period as efforts are made to maintain a stable power supply.
