The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has voted to reject the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) recommendation to suspend its strike over galamsey.

This decision follows the NEC’s directive on October 24 for UTAG members to end their industrial action by October 29, 2024.

UTAG initiated the strike on October 10 in protest against the government’s perceived inaction on illegal mining, which has had a devastating impact on river bodies and forest reserves across the country.

The strike has led to a significant disruption of academic activities in various public universities nationwide.

In its statement, the NEC encouraged UTAG members to return to classrooms. Tertiary students are expected to resume classes on November 1, 2024.

However, in an election held at the University of Ghana Chapter, 290 members voted to continue the industrial action, while 226 voted to call it off.
